We proudly remember 2022 – the year of success and humanitarian contribution to helping others

Although we welcomed the new year 2023, which we are very much looking forward to, now is the right moment to return to 2022 briefly. And highlight all those beautiful moments and achieved goals that we made in 2022. It was a year full of beautiful but also challenging business moments, but what fills us and makes us happy is the fact that this year, we succeeded in one of our main goals, which is helping others: children, animals, and nature, all with the goal that the future of us and our youngest will be as excellent and high-quality as possible.

Helping others for a better future: Our humanitarian cooperation with the Association Dora and Šapa u srcu

We signed an agreement with the Dora Association, a humanitarian organization in child and youth care in Croatia, on annual scholarships for their residents. With a monthly monetary donation, we help educate their wards and contribute to the quality of their lives. We are delighted that, in this way, we made everyday life at least a little easier for the younger generations and prepared them to face the future ahead of them.

For the tails of man’s best friend to continue to wave happily and to thank the people who care for them every day with devotion, we supported the work of the “Šapa u srcu” Association from Ogulin with a donation of HRK 5,000. We hope that the tummies of the residents of this Association have been filled, and we wish them to settle happily as soon as possible and find their forever families where they will be happy forever.

Sustainability and social responsibility – Our contribution to a better future through helping others

We became a bronze sponsor of the Association “Zasadi stablo, ne budi panj” and supported the 4th national tree planting campaign in the Republic of Croatia in 2022 with a donation of HRK 5,000. We liked this initiative, and we believe that investing in nature by planting new trees is one of the best contributions to a better and better future for nature and humanity.

In addition to all of the above, there are other things that we can proudly point out: we are also paying attention in 2022. contributed to making all our promotional materials biodegradable, but also making all packaging ecological.

With continuous care to produce as little waste as possible inside and outside the office and to separate the trash properly, we have started cooperation with a company that buys large quantities of our office waste and disposes of it properly. We place great importance on hygiene and cleanliness, which is why we supported the “Sapuni s točkicama” project of the Association of the Blind Zagreb by purchasing their liquid soap for office needs. Our goal is to keep this excellent project in the future as well. It is well known that we at Almagea put health care first. Therefore, all our employees have contracted additional health insurance this year to prevent and preserve their health. We also helped the work of numerous student associations, congresses, and gatherings held in 2022 by donating our products.

The thyroid gland, nestled in the lower part of the neck, is a critical component of the human endocrine system. Comprising two lobes resembling a butterfly, its significance is underscored by terms such as “the main energy gland” and “the regulator of all body cells.” This is because the hormones produced by the thyroid directly impact cellular metabolism, determining the rate at which food is converted into energy.

In essence, the thyroid influences every bodily process through two essential hormones: triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). A balanced diet, physical activity, and a sufficient amount of sleep, under normal circumstances, will ensure the proper functioning of the body for the majority of the population. However, when we talk about challenging situations in which we push the body to the highest limits of endurance, such as professional athletes or keen recreationists, any help gaining energy and protecting the body is welcome. This is where nutritional supplements for athletes come in.

The data shows that many athletes use nutritional supplements to improve performance, overcome fatigue, or increase muscle mass.

In a Dutch study published in 2017 of nearly 800 elite athletes, 97% said male nutritional supplements were used during their athletic careers. When asked how many dietary supplements for athletes were present in their diet in the last four weeks, almost 85% gave an affirmative answer. Of all sports products and ergogenic food supplements, along with isotonic drinks, the most popular were vitamin-mineral food supplements for athletes, and they were used by almost 43% of respondents. The research results in which Spanish elite athletes participated were also interesting – they use proteins the most, while amino acids such as L-carnitine are in second place.

Dietary supplements for athletes such as L-carnitine, L-arginine and L-citrulline

L-carnitine is a molecule that transports long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondrion, where their oxidation occurs, using fat for energy. We know how vital energy, greater muscle mass, and a lower proportion of fat tissue in the body are to athletes. In addition to L-carnitine, nutritional supplements for athletes often contain L-arginine as it is an amino acid that is the main ingredient for synthesizing nitric oxide.

Nitric oxide plays an essential role in many bodily functions, including regulating vasodilation, i.e., the expansion of blood vessels. If the blood vessels are adequately dilated, they help (more efficiently) bring nutrients and oxygen to the muscles during exercise and thus help them in their work. Also, L-arginine is one of the primary substrates for creatine production in the liver and pancreas. Chemically, creatine is a nitrogen-containing molecule but not a protein. It is found in the muscles and helps to supply them with energy, especially during high-intensity exercises. For example, the popular HIIT training (high-intensity interval training) requires explosive strength and power. Another interesting amino acid is L-citrulline, the richest in watermelon, and it increases the level of L-arginine and serves as a substrate for the production of nitric oxide, the previously mentioned vasodilator.

Zinc and testosterone

Specific vitamins and minerals are of particular importance to athletes. Special emphasis is placed on the fact that men in sports should provide adequate nutrients needed to synthesize testosterone in their diet. First, this concerns the mineral zinc necessary to produce the testosterone hormone. Testosterone is known to us as the hormone of sexuality and reproduction. Still, it is also crucial for building muscle mass, and the intensity of its natural synthesis in the body decreases after age thirty. Also, zinc contributes to the normal metabolism of macronutrients – mainly fats and proteins. Namely, in the synthesis of proteins, zinc is necessary for all steps of the synthesis as part of the enzymes, without which these processes are impossible. In addition to the above, zinc is also essential for athletes because it protects cells from oxidative stress and contributes to the work of the immune system.

The relationship between sport and oxidative stress

Physical activity or muscle contractions in the body cause the formation of harmful reactive oxygen compounds. In the fight against reactive oxygen compounds, the body’s antioxidant system is mobilized after exercise. If the physical effort exceeds the organism’s ability to neutralize harmful oxygen compounds, oxidative stress occurs in the cells. This condition damages cells and tissues, such as muscles, causing fatigue. Oxidative stress should be taken seriously as this condition underlies many diseases today, including cardiovascular disease and cancer, which nutritional supplements for athletes can significantly help with.

Key vitamins, minerals and antioxidants

A diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and various phytochemicals is the best strategy in the fight against oxidative stress in recreational and professional sports.

Taking 5-MTHF also prevents the potential adverse effects of so-called “unmetabolized” folate in the peripheral circulation.

5-MTHF is the dominant physiological form that has several advantages over folic acid:

it is immediately available for transport to the target tissue and metabolism,
does not create “unmetabolized” folate in the blood,
