FloraGLO® Lutein and OPTISHARP™ Natural Zeaxanthin are natural carotenoids obtained from the velvet flower with clinically proven positive effects in all periods of life.
Lutein and zeaxanthin are two plant pigments from the group of carotenoids that give fruits and vegetables their yellow to reddish color. Our bodies cannot synthesize them, so getting them through food and supplements is essential, and they work best when combined.
It has been proven that the level of lutein and zeaxanthin in the blood increases during pregnancy and is transferred to the fetus via the umbilical cord blood. In contrast, the levels of other known carotenoids in the pregnant woman’s blood remain unchanged.
After being transferred from the mother to the unborn baby, lutein and zeaxanthin are concentrated in the retina of the fetus between the 17th and 22nd week of pregnancy. Nutrients taken in by the mother are excreted in the milk and indirectly protect the infant during breastfeeding so that the importance of lutein and zeaxanthin does not end even after childbirth. Lutein and zeaxanthin are concentrated in the brain, skin, and breast tissue, but also in breast milk, thus providing antioxidant protection for the baby.
Due to its vital role in cell division and the formation of specific fetal structures, it is recommended to use folate 12 weeks before conception. Prenatal Omega3+ contains two forms of folic acid – the active form of 5-MTHF (600 µg) and folic acid (200 µg), contributing to the optimal bioavailability of folate in the mother’s body. Low maternal folate presents a risk of developing neural tube defects in the developing fetus.

Is it necessary to take omega-3 fatty acids during the pregnancy planning phase and up to the breastfeeding phase?
Omega-3 fatty acids are recognized as essential nutrients during pregnancy and early childhood and play an important role in reducing the risk of degenerative diseases later in life. From birth to 18 months of life, the baby’s brain creates 1 million new neural connections per second. In this sensitive period for the growth of the brain and the development of mental abilities, the intake of specific nutrients such as DHA is of particular importance because it is the dominant building structure of the brain and the retina of the eye. Given that the placenta in the last trimester actively draws the mother’s reserves of omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA, in order to provide the child with sufficient amounts for the growth and development of the brain, it is extremely important that the mother provides sufficient supplies of DHA from the very beginning of pregnancy, as in the last trimester and during breastfeeding would not report a deficit. Considering the importance of the intake of omega-3 fatty acids, competent institutions in Europe recommend a daily intake of at least 250 and preferably 300 mg of omega-3 (as a combination of DHA and EPA) to pregnant and lactating women in order to reduce the risk of developing postpartum depression . Some studies link chronic fatigue, which occurs in nursing mothers, with the consequences of depletion of DHA reserves in the body, as well as atopic dermatitis, which occurs more and more often in newborns.
Is fish oil, as a source of omega-3 fatty acids, safe for pregnant and lactating women?
Fish oils are rich in omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA) and are safe for use, and no toxic effects of their daily intake for mother and child have been established. The fish oil available in Prenatal Omega3+ is purified using the strictest molecular distillation method.
Why take omega-3 fatty acids during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that is the building block of the brain and the retina of the eye. It is believed that the intake of 200 mg of DHA per day in pregnant and lactating women contributes to the normal development of the brain and eye of the fetus and breastfed infants.
What are the benefits of taking Prenatal Omega3+?
Prenatal Omega3+ ensures the intake of key nutrients during the period before conception, during pregnancy and breastfeeding. During these wonderful, but also demanding periods of a woman’s life, it particularly helps to meet the increased needs for: (active) folic acid, iron, vitamin D, zinc, copper, selenium and omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA). In addition, Prenatal Omega3+ differs from all other nutritional supplements for pregnant women in that it also provides the intake of natural carotenoid pigments – lutein and zeaxanthin – which are important for protecting the eyes of the mother and baby, and are also a structural part of the brain and thus extremely important for its proper development from the first days of life. FloraGLO® Lutein and OPTISHARP™ Natural Zeaxanthin are derived from the velvet flower and have only recently been recognized as high-value ingredients for prenatal nutritional supplements.
What is special about the intake of FloraGLO® Lutein and OPTISHARP™ Natural Zeaxanthin?
Both are patented natural substances that have clinically proven beneficial effects on human health. FloraGLO® Lutein has been investigated in more than 100 clinical studies, it is quickly absorbed and has a high bioavailability, which allows an increase in the concentration of lutein in the plasma by 126% within 14 hours of taking it. It is the only lutein on the market that has a GRAS label (English: GRAS = Generally Recognized As Safe); safe use in infant formulas and EFSA approval for use in the nutrition of newborns and children. The advantage of OPTISHARP™ Natural zeaxanthin is its free, non-esterified form, which is why it is directly absorbed into the bloodstream and thus provides valuable beneficial effects.
What role do lutein and zeaxanthin play in contributing to the health of mom and baby?
Lutein and zeaxanthin are the only dietary carotenoids that accumulate in the retina of the eye, more specifically in the area of the macula, which plays an essential role in the sense of sight (mothers and babies). Lutein and zeaxanthin, vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids are important for the structure and thus the function of parts of the brain and eye. Thus, the Prenatal Omega3+ formulation enables the protection of the mother’s eyes (from harmful blue light) and at the same time contributes to proper cognitive development and eye and brain development of fetuses and breastfed infants.
How long is it recommended to take Prenatal Omega3+, in what dose and is it necessary to take breaks in its use?
Prenatal Omega3+ is recommended to be used in a dose of 2 capsules per day (2 times 1 capsule), with meals during the pregnancy planning period, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and it is not necessary to take breaks during this period of intake. Likewise, Prenatal Omega3+ is often used as a supplement for increased needs for key and essential nutrients in all demanding periods of life such as: sports competitions (during and after periods of restrictive diets), entrance exams, menorrhagia (heavy menstruation), due to mental/physical efforts and to protect eye health and sensitivity to blue light. For optimal supplementation of key nutrients for the health of the whole organism, we recommend taking 2 capsules a day for 3-6 months.
Does Prenatal Omega3+ contain preservatives?
The product does not contain preservatives due to the special shape of the Licaps® OceanCaps® capsule. Licaps® OceanCaps® does not contain lactose, starch, sugar, gluten, plasticizers, solvents, or GMOs.
How much does the need for folic acid increase during pregnancy?
Due to its key role in cell division and the formation of certain fetal structures, it is recommended to start using folate 12 weeks before conception. Additional intake of folic acid increases the mother’s folate level. A low level of folate in the mother’s body is a risk factor for the development of neural tube defects in the developing fetus. It is recommended that all women of reproductive age, in addition to a folate-rich diet, use food supplements containing 400 to 800 µg of folic acid every day – preferably as a combination of the active form (5-MTHF) and folic acid. Folic acid is the chemical form that is most often found in food supplements, however, it cannot fulfill its biological function before it is converted in the body into dihydrofolate (DHF) and tetrahydrofolate (THF), and this ability to convert folic acid into an active form (5 -MTHF) – is different in the population.
How prevalent is this genetic change in folate metabolism in the population and what can we do to reduce the risk of insufficient intake and enable intake of the bioavailable form of folate (5-MTHF)?
Statistics show that 30 to 50% of women carry genetic changes, that is, they have polymorphisms on genes related to folate metabolism or absorption. In their case, taking the active physiological form: 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) in a dose of 800 µg per day in the period before conception is significantly more beneficial.
Are there people for whom Prenatal Omega3+ is not recommended and why?
The product is not recommended for people who are allergic to fish and seafood.
